Environmental Assessments: EKAT

Problem
A branch of the military wanted expert software to perform environmental evaluation on military equipment that was being designed, built, deployed and demilitarized. They needed a tool that could serve as a preliminary environmental screening tool for regulatory requirements and identify other potential issues of concern. The tool would be used by military project managers without strong environmental backgrounds or expertise.

Solution
Together with M2 Technologies and Kansas State University, CABEM built an Environmental Knowledge and Assessment Tool called EKAT. EKAT is an automated tool to identify, research, and evaluate environmental and safety-related issues for products and systems. The application presents information on technical and regulatory requirements and serves as a resource center, linking to other references, tools, and databases to assist in research efforts to minimize any unintentional safety and environmental effects associated with product use. CABEM built the web based application in Microsoft.Net using C# as the programming language and a SQL 2000 database. CABEM installed servers and the application at the military base.
